NewTom Technology

What is the NewTom?

NewTom is short for a revolutionary technology called tomography. This technology is a procedure that generates computerized, three-dimensional images from multiple x-rays.

The NewTom 3D Scanner generates these three-dimensional (3D) images via a dedicated machine that scans a specific area. For orthodontic purposes, the NewTom 3D Scanner focuses on our patients' jaws. Since it is focused on a specific area, the scanner can produce three-dimensional images with only slightly more radiation than a conventional panoramic x-ray. A traditional hospital CAT scanner uses 20-30 times the radiation of the NewTom and a CAT scan is significantly more expensive. Also, because of the way that the image is captured with the NewTom, interference that can render a conventional CAT scan nearly unusable is virtually eliminated in a NewTom scan. The real benefit of the NewTom is that the images produced can be rotated and sliced resulting in a more thorough and accurate examination.

Additional NewTom Benefits

In addition to providing information that allows the doctors to do a more accurate orthodontic diagnosis —problems such as tumors, sinus problems and other related dental problems can be detected. Some Orthodontic Partners patients have come in with undiagnosed dental and facial problems and the NewTom scan was able to help the doctors detect the source of the problem and recommend the best course of treatment to the patient.

The information produced by the NewTom scan can provide some of the same information as study models thereby reducing and sometimes eliminating the need for impressions.

How long will the appointment take?

Generally an appointment takes 15 - 20 minutes while the scan itself lasts just a few minutes. Unlike a conventional CAT scan where the patient must enter a "tunnel," only the head is placed into the machine so someone who may be claustrophobic need not worry.

The NewTom is located at Orthodontic Partners in their Reno location on Grant Drive. An appointment can be made by calling (775) 825-4804.
